Obituary: Heberto José Ferrer Castellano, a trade unionst in heart and soul

On 11 October the sad news came to us that our dear colleague and friend Heberto José Ferrer Castellano passed away in his hometown Los Teques, Venezuela. Heberto suffered urgent breathing problems, but could not be hospitalized at the Victorino Santaella Regional Hospital, due to the inadequate health-care situation. While they were completing the transfer to a hospital in Caracas he suffered a heart-attack and died as a result of that.

Heberto commited his whole life to the improvement of the position of workers. He was Secretary General of the Latinamerican Federation of Workers in Education and Culture (Federación de Trabajadores Latinoamericanos de la Educación y la Cultura – FLATEC), Secretary General of the World Confederation of Teachers (Confederación Sindical Mundial de la Enseñanza – CSME) and Member of the Board of the former Latinamerican Central of Workers (Central Latinoamericana de Trabajadores – CLAT).

At the moment of his passing he was the actual Advisor to the General Confederation of Work (Confederación General del Trabajo – CGT), Member of the Ethical Committee of the Front for Copeyanos Workers (Comisión de Ética del Frente de Trabajadores Copeyanos) and Militant of the Democratic Trade Union Alternative for the Americas and the Caribbean (Alternativa Democrática Sindical de las Américas – ADS).

Heberto was a strong supporter and believer of the Christian-Social principles and these have always guided his work. He will truly be missed his family, friends, colleagues and all who met him.

May Heberto rest in peace.
