Homage on «Labour Day»

The recent Ordinary Congress of the Latin American and Caribbean Federation of Culture and Communication Workers (Federación Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Trabajadores de la Cultura y Comunicación – FELATRACCS) constituted a fraternal exchange of information and opinions on the work activity in this region of the world, not without solidarity with workers in particular and of humanity in general, who suffer helplessly from the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic, social and political crisis.

The expressions of the representatives of the organizations that make up FELATRACCS, however, expressed the magnitude of the problem with a positive spirit, pointing out that, although the word crisis now dominates all scenarios of social life, as regards trade unionism, its environment, its integral humanist doctrine, its culture, its effectiveness, offer perspectives that, sooner rather than later, will make a fairer and more dignified life possible for working people.

Hence, the message that we are launching unrestrained today on the occasion of «Labour Day», commemorating the sacrifice of the Chicago martyrs, has the meaning of a serious and responsible attitude, within the common search for answers to the great challenges that the world reality presents. Challenges such as the increasing individualization of the labour relationship, the progressive deregulation of the labour market, the deep cuts in an already scarce social and solidarity protection, which the organized movement of workers must take on.

Finally, we must reiterate that FELATRACCS has a path mapped out. It encourages and shares the concerns regarding trade union action of those who have no more assets than the good that their work generates. That is why it integrates in a proactive and dialogue attitude, with those who are aware that the economy must be at the service of the human being and not the other way around. In the same way, it longs to join forces, as preached by the World Organization of Workers – WOW with those who remain faithful to social commitment, because it is a militant of life, personal and collective, because it is excited to unite its destiny with those who suffer the most, materially and spiritually, the evils derived from forgetfulness, discrimination and marginalization in the usufruct of the common good.
