FELATRABS Congress: the position and role of trade unions in relation to technological changes

From 27 – 29 June 2018 FELATRABS organized its statutory congress in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Prior to the congress a seminar was organized titled: ‘The role of trade unions in relation to technological changes.’ This is a very important topic in general, but for the financial sector in particular. It is expected that many jobs will be lost due to automation. On the other hand it is also expected that many new jobs will be created. Jobs that may not even exist today.

On the first day the focus was on the Argentina situation. Argentina is currently experiencing difficult times. Both politically as well as economically. Debates were heated but with much respect for the vision of others. Additionally a number of delegates present were given the opportunity to share experiences from their respective countries. This showed a varied landscape.

The second day was a more general approach of the effects for the continent and outside. The presentation was well-balanced and showed that the uncertainties of what is to come are shared by all. It is truly a global issue. It also influences the position of the unions, because it is expected that further automation will have effects on the further individualization of the world of work. This will make the role of unions a different one and most probably a more complicated one.

The statutory congress was well-prepared and thus a formality. The governing board of FELATRABS is as follows:

President – Mr. José Jesus Trabulo de Souza (Brasil)
Secretary General – Mr. Miguel Angel Duche (Argentina)
Deputy Secretary General – Mr. René Rivera (Argentina)
Secretary Organization and Finance – Mr. Luis Iraola (Uruguay)
Deputy Secretary Organization and Finance – Mr. Arturo Quiñoa (Argentina)
Executive Secretary – Mr. Leonardo Márquez Suarez (Uruguay)
